It took place in a house located in Safdarjung Enclave in the early hours of Wednesday. An elderly couple was burnt alive to death in the fire. The fire broke out on the third floor. Valuable items worth lakhs of rupees kept in the house were also burnt to ashes. Five vehicles of the fire department reached the spot and brought the fire under control. The deceased have been identified as Govind Ram Nagpal (80) and his wife Sheela Nagpal (78). The elderly couple lived alone in the house. His son is in America, while his daughter lives in Paschim Vihar area. According to the fire department, the cause of the fire is believed to be short circuit.

According to the information, Govind Ram Nagpal lived with his wife Sheela Nagpal on the third floor of house number 204 located in B-2 block of Safdarjung Enclave. Govind Ram was retired from Kelvinator Company. Whereas, his wife Vidya had retired from Niketan. The couple went to sleep as usual at night. At around quarter to six in the morning, flames suddenly started rising from the third floor of the house. When people nearby saw smoke and flames rising from the house, they informed the fire department and police.
According to South West District Police Deputy Commissioner Surendra Chaudhary, on receiving information about the fire, apart from the fire department, the local police and CAT ambulance teams reached the spot. Three vehicles of the fire department brought the fire under control. On reaching inside the house, the elderly couple was found lying dead. Due to the fire, all the items in the house were burnt to ashes.
Police investigation revealed that the couple had a son and a daughter in their family. His son Vineet Nagpal lives in America, while his daughter lives in Paschim Vihar. The police have kept the bodies in the mortuary for post-mortem. A case has been registered and investigation is being done.
